1. Do I have to be a dance minor in order to audition for the company?
Absolutely not! Our auditions are open to any student passionate about dancing in our dance concerts. Auditions typically happen the first week of each semester, and students signup for a time-slot to audition. Each choreographer teaches an audition, and students audition per dance rather than for just the entirety of the concert. During the process, auditioning students state how many dances they would like to be considered for, and choreographers take this into consideration during the auditions.
2. Is the dance company affiliated with the Vikettes?
No the dance company is not affiliated with the Vikettes. The dance company is part of the official dance department of Berry College that performs two dance concerts per year. The dance styles of each concert range from contemporary to ballet to hip-hop as well as tap.
3. Can I minor in dance even if it’s not a career I want to purse?
Absolutely! The dance department is perfect for any student who has a passion for dance and a passion for learning more about dance, the history of the different forms, and the technique behind the different forms. The minor program is open to any student, even if they have never danced before.
4. Do I have to be a minor in order to take dance classes?
Dance technique classes are open to any student wanting to learn a new technique or continue their learning of a certain technique. The other dance classes are open to any student, as long as the prerequisite course for the class has been met.
5. Is it required that I choreograph a dance in order to be in the dance company?
It is not required that a student choreograph a dance for the dance concert, but the opportunity is open to all students who complete the choreography class. Any student can audition for the dance company. If a student wishes to choreograph for a dance concert, they must first complete the choreography class and be approved to choreograph for a Berry College dance concert.
6. Is there a major program?
Currently, there is not a major program, but there is a minor program open to any student to be a part of. We do offer students the opportunity to become an interdisciplinary major where dance might combined with another major to enhance the student experience. An example of this might be combining dance with psychology where a student will have two academic advisors creating courses to fit requirements in this created major. Students have the opportunity to do this for either a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science. For specifics on what can be done and has been done in the past, feel free to reach out to the director of the dance program, Sarah Pecina, for more information.
7. Are there any scholarships I can apply for just for dance?
At the current moment, we do not offer any scholarships in the department. The college accepts any and all outside scholarships. If you happen to have received any scholarships at competitions or through your studio, you are allowed to bring those over to Berry!
8. Do I have to be a dance minor in order to work for the dance department.
Yes, you have to be a dance minor to work in our department through the LifeWorks program.
